Immerse yourself in Cultural land and sea management practices on Country with the Traditional Custodians of Far North Queensland and grassroots community groups from across Australia.
The inaugural Biri Bulmba Budang National Custodians of Country Gathering 2023 (the Gathering) is being held from Monday 21 to Friday 25 August 2023 at Tjapukai (Djabugay) Cultural Park Cairns, Far North Queensland. Formerly the National Indigenous Fire Workshop.
Hosted by Wet Tropics Bama with Firesticks Alliance, the event is proudly supported by Landcare Australia and the First Nations Landcare Working Group to bring greater awareness and opportunity to broader Australia of the contribution of Indigenous knowledge.
This is a unique gathering between First Nations people and non-Indigenous Australians connecting people who are involved in agriculture, conservation, land and sea and natural resource management to explore best practice and innovation; share practical information and stories; and create partnerships to support First Nations engagement, knowledge and practice in your workplace and community.
The Gathering will bring together Traditional Custodians from across Australia to demonstrate and share practical innovation for contemporary land and sea management, biodiversity, threatened species management and best practice agriculture.
The practical Masterclass sessions will include ethnobotany, Cultural Fire indicators and monitoring, threatened species management, tool making, art, dancing, weaving, and Indigenous knowledge of plants and agriculture, fire management and blue carbon. The symposia sessions will showcase Indigenous practitioners, leading presentations and panel discussions on Indigenous knowledge and agriculture, partnerships in agriculture, Indigenous led research and partnerships, water, cultural and environmental markets, economic opportunities, and education and wellbeing.
Over 600 people are expected to attend this important event which will showcase partnerships between Traditional Owners and First Nations people, and non Indigenous people including community, individuals, farmers, landholders, and volunteer group including landcare. The Gathering aims to educate attendees on the benefits of working together to protect and improve the viability and health of our land and sea for future generations. An important outcome of the Gathering is for people to learn firsthand how Traditional knowledge and governance can contribute solutions to today’s social and environmental concerns.
Led by Firesticks Alliance, the Gathering is created and hosted by First Nations people, and will celebrate the diversity and richness of Aboriginal culture and knowledge, and how this benefits community through environmental wellbeing and revitalisation.
For people unable to travel to Cairns, selected sessions will be made available online for virtual delegates.
